The challenges faced by Brazilian women traveling alone

Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges faced by Brazilian women who travel alone. It reflects on the process of seeking female independence and around the structural machismo present, both in the daily lives of women, as in the scope of the tourist activity. The feminist movements were important in this journey and represent their achievements in an expressive way. In this context, the female identity is less and less influenced by traditional family roles. To obtain results in the research we chose to conduct a focus group, through a meeting with five volunteer participants, who have experiences in traveling alone. The reports were the basis for the analysis that seeks to punctuate, expose, clarify, and highlight the challenges, accomplishments, and perspectives related to the central theme. The results indicate the search for self-knowledge, motivated by the desire for a sense of freedom and opposition to social paradigms, including in the family context.
