Resumo
A Fitoterapia, que consiste na utilização de plantas para preservar a saúde e tratar a doença, é uma das Terapêuticas Não Convencionais/TNCs (TNCs) cuja prática profissional se encontra legalizada em Portugal. A Fitoterapia detém um saber que adveio da experiência do uso de plantas alimentares e medicinais pelo Homem durante toda a sua existência. Do desenvolvimento histórico da Fitoterapia emergiram marcantes afinidades e dissimilaridades com outras Terapêuticas não Convencionais que também recorrem a plantas medicinais, designadamente a Naturopatia e as Medicinas Tradicional Chinesa (MTC) e Ayurveda. A eficácia e a utilidade da Fitoterapia encontram-se reconhecidas nacional e internacionalmente. Com a plena regulamentação legal da profissão de fitoterapeuta, os portugueses passarão a usufruir duma Fitoterapia com qualidade acreditada. Neste contexto, e com o objectivo de proporcionar um correcto conceito da Fitoterapia do presente, neste artigo descreve-se o que no essencial foi a génese histórica da Fitoterapia, como antecedente do que hoje a caracteriza e posiciona em relação às restantes terapêuticas convencionais e não convencionais, nomeadamente no que toca a paradigmas, preceitos e metodologias. Partindo desta base, são descritas as características fundamentais da Fitoterapia do presente e analisam-se as perspectivas da sua evolução à luz da regulamentação em curso da sua prática profissional.
Abstract
Phytotherapy, which consists in the use of plants to preserve health and treat illness, is one of the non- conventional therapies/nct witch professional practice is legal in Portugal. Phytotherapy holds a knowledge that comes upon from mankind experience of the use of food and medicinal plants throughout their existence. From Phytotherapy´s historical development emerged striking affinities and dissimilarities with other non-conventional therapeutics that also appeal to medicinal plants, namely Naturopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic. The effectiveness and usefulness of Phytotherapy are recognized nationally and internationally. With the full legal regulation of the Phytot herapist profession, the Portugues
population will make use of a Phytotherapy with accredited quality. In this context and in order to provide a proper view of nowadays Phytotherapy, this article describes what essentially was the historical genesis of Phytotherapy, as antecedent of what characterizes it and stands on in relation to other conventional and non- conventional therapeutics, particularly regarding paradigms, principles and methodologies. On that basis, the fundamental characteristics of nowadays Phytotherapy are described, and the prospects for its development in the light of the current regulation of their professional practice are analyzed.
