Higher education is one of the engines for the central pieces in economic development of nations, as it contributes to the training of qualified professionals capable of facing the challenges imposed by globalization and social pressure in various domains. Being a research developed in Mozambique, a country with enormous socio-cultural and economic asymmetries, this research aims to analyze access to higher education, focusing on the association between the students birthplace and the location of the institution where they attend the higher education. Thus, data from public and private higher education institutions–HEIs were used, wich allowed the determination of the estimated contingency coeficiente, for data from students enrolled in public and private HEIs in the year 2017. The results indicate that there exists an association between the variables under study, at a 95% reliability level.
