Abstract

eHealth has emerged as a tool for quality improvement in healthcare. It is a central issue in health policies both in Europe and in other political and economic areas. The aim is to survey how the use of eHealth impacts patient safety, particularly in the collection, storage and use of data.

A scoping review in scientific databases was performed with the definition of inclusion criteria and subsequent selection respecting the PCC criteria (population, concept and context) in order to achieve the objectives.

Associated with the diversity in the origin of the articles, we found that there are different realities and multiple complexities regarding the role and regulation of eHealth in health care, translating into a greater or lesser maturity in the face of eHealth and the operational and ethical legal issues that support it. This diversity requires a contextualized and adaptable approach, whose evolution depends on the socio-political context and continuous evolution of technology.

eHealth is undoubtedly a tool that brings benefits in health policy adoption and patient centricity, benefiting all stakeholders. There are already initiatives from leading organizations for security and also transparency of health data use. However, there are few studies that validate, based on evidence, the parameters that guide the correct use of eHealth.
