Abstract

The expedition led by Martin Afonso de Sousa was part of a project ordered by the king João III. To search for riches, expelling the Spanish and French pirates as well as to serve as a recognition of the Brazilian coastline. The voyage’s diary (an incomplete and blotched copy) reveals curious aspects of that exploratory voyage: the possession of the land by the Portuguese, customs of the native culture and above all the 16th century-Portuguese perspective of the new world. This piece of news-document witnesses among other impressive events, the launching for the Portuguese colonization in Brazil.
