During the 1st Portuguese Republic, history always had a highly visible place in the political and doctrinal argumentation and legitimization of the new regime. In those years the process of nationalization of the Portuguese went on in various fields. The historical memory was one of them. Which were the major historical debates in Portuguese historiography? How did national memory turn into a republican memory? Among other topics (e.g. formation of Portugal, decadence) special emphasis is given to the 1640 restoration to examine the extent to which historians contributed to the building of a national memory, as we know that many other social agents were involved in this process.
