Abstract

From the empirical and historical study of a central actor within the Portuguese scientific system, we call for a deeper understanding on the creation and action of the National Board of Scientific and Technological Research (JNICT), over the last years of the Portuguese New State period (1967-1974). Created in 1967, still in the time of Salazar, this study pretends to identify and discuss the profile and intentions of JNICT. Will be further evaluated jnict performance on the last act of the Portuguese New State regime, its specificity, its historical and political constraints, as well as sketching an assessment on the legacy of this central institutional player in the history of Portuguese organization of science, and like this widening the understanding on the trajectory and identity of the national “S&T system”.
