This article analyses the structural changes of youth employment between 15 and 24 years of age, with compulsory basic education (ISCED 0-2) in 1988, 1998 and 2007 based on the unpublished data from Quadros de Pessoal (Labour Census – Public sector excluded) of the Ministry of Employment and Social Solidarity. The exploration of variables such as contract, seniority, working hours and remuneration, allows configuring an autonomous labour market of juvenile manpower with regard to the general labour market. It concludes by arguing that schooling is a key differentiator of the employment relation of less educated young people towards higher educated one.
