Abstract

This article discuss four senses of the frontier/border, extending the work of Sergio Buarque de Holanda: the “hybrid zone” conception or “territory-bridge” in the understanding of Iberian singularity; frontier/border as division marker between Portuguese and Hispanic colonization; the fronts of expansion or frontiers in movement in the process of colonization; and last, the boundary as a transition, going from the Iberian singularity to a modern and urban world.
