This article analyzes the strategies of social reproduction of noble families in a colonial context. The focus is on certain families in the civil parish of Campo Grande, in Rio de Janeiro, from the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries. By examining the types of marriages sought, and the manner of transmitting land ownership, we seek to understand the case in Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro, in relationship to the Portuguese mechanisms of inheritance and estate transmission in the same period.
