The study of Henry Burnay’s fortune and patrimony, after his post mortem inventory, intends to address the definition of typologies at Lisbon’s highest fortunes during the second half of the nineteenth century, with special attention to the relationship between the state’s businesses and private initiative and to the patrimonial differentiation set by the distinct investment strategies. The analysis of Henry Burnay’s business life and remarkable fortune, on which Henry Burnay & Co. is founded, leads us into the comparison with profiles derived from participation in the opportunities guaranteed by the liberal state and by the commercial activity.
