Analysis of the concept of culture in the social sciences has a long history and has been approached in many different ways. This article seeks to explain its use in the context of strategies for researching the cultures of the professions. We have summarized the different positions and methodologies in the social sciences relating to the concept of culture (epistemologies of culture). Our approach is phenomenogicallybased, using the contributions of Anthony Giddens and Claude Dubar, and adopts a critical stance toward Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of social practice. We offer a different view of culture as object (the epistemology of culture-conjuncture) when used to analyze the work of technical and intellectual working groups.
