Abstract

This article seeks to uncover the significance of the “peasant-Fascism” nexus in the world of meanings acquired by rurality in the context of cultural and civic action campaigns conducted by the Armed Forces’ Movement (MFA — Movimento das Forças Armadas) in 1974-1975. Peasants and Fascism are the two poles of an argument that projects a negative image of Portugal, much publicized at the time of the transition to democracy.
