The psychotherapeutic place: critical considerations for intervention with transgender and/or gender non-conforming individuals

Abstract

This bibliographic essay seeks to explore the experiences of transgender and/or gender non-conforming (TGNC) people on the use of psychotherapy services. We begin by reviewing the state of the art of existing guidelines for psychotherapeutic intervention with this population. Followed by a bibliographic review aimed at accessing narratives of TGNC people about their psychotherapeutic processes, selecting four articles that explore a total of 70 narratives of TGNC people. We present an integrative exploration of the main findings of these researches. Finally, from a critical social constructionist positioning, some considerations for a critical psychotherapeutic practice with TGNC people are presented.
