Abstract

The Lisbon earthquake of 1 November 1755 produced a completely new concept of evil, formulated by Rousseau: there is only moral evil, and man is entirely responsible for it, including the damage caused by natural disasters. But this idea splintered with the moral disasters of the twentieth century. With new threats to human survival, we need to look at evil in new terms.
