Ebb and flow of the «capoeira»: Brazil and Portugal in the round

Abstract

This article analyses exchanges between Brazil and Portugal, demonstrating the shifts, the complexities and the dynamic nature of this process. The conflictual nature of inter-ethnic relationships built up through significant cultural practices help to consolidate identity-forming processes linking the general with the locally specific, with individuals directing and seeking meaning in their own lives, even if they are subject to the structural constraints which influence specific cultural production.
