An aristocratic follower of Costa Cabral

Abstract

The marquis of Fronteira was one of the few aristocrats who became an enthusiastic follower of «cabralismo», charmed by the conservatism and anti-revolutionary vigour which Costa Cabral brought to Portuguese politics. The prominence which he enjoyed at the time was not the result of any particular talent for politics, but to his dual role as head of the secret police and commander of the Portuguese national battalions. This is what his Memórias in large measure seek to disguise.
