This article looks at the cycles of Australian and Portuguese foreign policy in relation to East Timor. It first looks at what has been called Portugal's «long wait» and Australia's long «wound». It goes on to describe the ending of the impasse and the changes in diplomatic positions which took place from 1998 onwards.
