This article seeks to provide an outline of the «theory of social representations», as formulated by Moscovici. Starting out from of a summary of his 1961 work, in which the idea of social representation emerged for the first time, the author seeks to show, on the basis of his subsequent writings, what has stayed the same and what has changed in Moscovici's formulations over the last 40 years.
