The author traces the parallels in the processes of independence and national construction of Indonesia and Timor. In spite of the historical distance and the very different circumstances of each case, there are still similar aspects regarding their separations from their respective colonial powers (Holland and Portugal) and in the contributions made by institutions connected to the home country, such as the armed forces, the educational and administrative institutions and the church.
