Different temperaments, experiences and politics, Manuel Pinheiro Chagas and José Maria Eça de Queirós never tired of arguing with each other during the second half of the 19th century. Although it was almost always the former who started the controversy, neither could resist arguing. Of all the debates they had, the most interesting took place in 1880-1881 on the question of patriotism.
