In Portugal little is known about the contours of single-parenthood. The article seeks to fill this gap. An initial discussion of the concept of single parent families is made and emphasises the recent emergence of this idea in contrast to the oldness of the phenomenon. Information was gathered from population surveys and some European surveys. In this way the evolution of single-parent families is analysed by placing them in the context of the European Union.
