Abstract

Social mobility has not been given the attention in Portugal that it has had in other modern societies. This essay is a contribution to filling in this gap. It is a quantification exercise on social mobility in Portugal on the basis of a survey carried out in 1994 using a class grid adapted from that proposed by John Goldthorpe. In addition to this, the author presents a number of conclusions as to the way in which class membership and social mobility effect the attitudes of the Portuguese population as regards a relevant set of questions on national life.
