In comparison with the other EU member states, Portugal has a prominent position in terms of the tobacco consumption in the over 15 age groups. On the basis of the data provided by the National Health Survey 1995/96 at the regional level, the conclusion can be made that the percental difference between the sexes is also a lot greater in relation to tobacco consumption, with the consumption amongst women sometimes as low as one quarter of that of their male counterparts. And it is the consumption of tobacco that also registers the greatest differences amongst women, at the regional level, in the lifestyle indicators used. The consumption of alcohol is, however, the dominant behaviour in both the male and female sexes. Regular physical exercise is incipient, although one should point out that the Lisbon region is the region with the highest value for both sexes.
