Abstract

This article seeks to show the local context within the framework of the overall the process of globalisation, which is evident in both the economic area (processes of local development) and in the social (local identities) and political fields (democratisation and new forms of provision of services). More concretely, the argument is put forward that, as a result of the process of globalisation, a series of new opportunities is opened up at the local government level that can trigger off processes of economic, social and political development with the intense involvement of the local players. This trend which, simultaneously with globalisation, connects the dynamics and processes of change in contemporary societies to one another is known as «new localism».
