Emigration had great importance as a migratory movement, but the commercial opportunities that it created should also be studied. The author looks at Portuguese emigration during the period 1870-1914. The article includes an initial estimate of the sums of money that were involved, and establishes their importance in the economy of the time. On the basis of this, the state's taxation interests, the involvement of civil servants and agents, and the central role of the shipping companies are analysed.
