In Portugal no study exists on theatre audiences, though their importance is now being recognised. As a starting point this study uses data originating in two surveys carried out on a limited scale in Lisbon between 1987 and 1988, comparing them with the methodologies and results of surveys carried out both in Viana do Castelo and in other countries. The first hypotheses are formulated regarding the characteristics of Lisbon theatre audiences and the profiles of their different companies. Finally certain suggestions are advanced in relation to the methodologies for future research.
