Portuguese emigrants, common cultural rootsAbstract
The author focuses her analysis on the fraction of those Portuguese emigrants that are tied together by common cultural roots, and yet diverse: different spaces of insertion, different surrounding nationalities, different linguistic prevalences. It is important that these groups or communities adhere to an idea of culture of their own, with a minimum of homogeneity, and based upon the common ancestral roots of an evolution that is expected to be convergent in the future. To meet this purpose of unity, suitable policies for defence and expansion of the language are to be implemented, and consequently, a greater effort as to its teaching and diffusion is to be developped. Moreover, the interrelation of these countries or communities with common cultural roots (in opposition to the environing alterities) should be based on various ways of horizontal cooperation within the political, social, economical and cultural fields. Anyway, the main effort should direct towards building up a will of defence of the common heritage, however disagreeing sovereignties or ideologies in each space may be.
