In November 1986, a research meeting took place in Oporto which dealt with the regional specificity of the «house» (casa) of northwestern Portugal. In order to produce an integrated picture of the «house» as a social, symbolical and physical unit, it was felt that a deepening of contact between specialists in divers fields of knowledge was required. In his introductory text, João de Pina Cabral suggests the conditions under which the pluridisciplinary study of the «house» can become a privileged viewpoint for regionality as a sociocultural phenomenon.
