Since it is the prevailing case in the whole historical processus of Portugues emigration, the departure of Portuguese people to Brazil was, in numbers and global duration, the largest and longest of all thefluxes. Only after the first half of the twentieth century there have been other emigration destinies, now placed inside the European continent, reaching a similar quantitative expression. The return of emigrants, closing the circle of their itinerary, happened in the past as well as it has happens today: the easy identification of those coming back to their homeland - after having fulfilled their objectives of economic or social promotion - is the result of a voluntary attitude of exteriorization of the success achieved.
