The Covid-19 pandemic and the future: challenges for the social sciences
Special issue information
The Editorial Board of Análise Social invites submissions of original articles that explore the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Extensive scientific production already demonstrated that Covid-19 is having a profound impact in all the areas of social life. This pandemic has laid bare and increased the lasting structures of inequality in society. It deeply affected people’s lives, health and well-being, the way we work, communicate with each other and exercise our citizenship.
A trigger of fear and feelings of uncertainty, the pandemic is also fostering the collective imagination about the future. What will the post-Covid-19 world be like? At present, the medium and long-term consequences of the pandemic raise more doubts than certainties, with new and multiple avenues of research opening every day. However, beyond the growing speculations and anxieties about the future, whether optimistic or pessimistic, social sciences have a central role to play. Social Sciences need to rise to unprecedented challenges and find new ways to look at the future. More than ever, we need to reflect upon the epistemologies and methodologies we use to gain knowledge of and act upon the world.
We are launching a call for papers on the challenges ahead and the role of the Social Sciences. Confronted with an unprecedented pandemic crisis, how should we move ahead? Is revisiting the classics enough or do we need to reinvent new concepts? What can we learn from our historical past? Is it enough to look back or, instead, do we need to reimagine our theories? What new challenges are we facing in our research? Is it enough to adjust old tools or do we need to reinvent methodological practices and interdisciplinary articulations? What bridges can we establish with the natural sciences anew? What ethical questions emerge from our fields of research? How can the Social Sciences look into the future? And how can they contribute to mitigating the hazardous effects of the pandemic?
We encourage the submission of papers that might contribute to thinking about the future and the role of the Social Sciences. The topics above are merely prompts, and should not be considered an exhaustive list of possible topics. Articles may be theoretical, methodological or empirical. They may be submitted in Portuguese or English.
