Abstract

Antonio José de Ávila (count, marquis and duke of Ávila and Bolama) experienced one of the most celebrated rises in society of 19th century liberalism, being the only plebeian to enter the highly restricted circle of dukes of monarchical constitutionalism as well as having one of the longest political parliamentary careers of his time. This article details his singular social prominence and political career along with a presentation of his personality and modus vivendi.
