Abstract

Mandibulofacial dysostosis Guion-Almeida type is a rare polymalformative syndrome with progressively severe craniofacial anomalies, associated with difficulties in ventilation with facial mask and tracheal intubation.

The difficult paediatric airway is an important cause of anaesthetic morbidity and mortality. Alternative devices to conventional laryngoscope are available and facilitate handling of a difficult airway with less damage of the tracheal mucosa. We portray a case of a small child with this syndrome in two different surgical moments, describing the airway approach in each of them and comparing the devices that were used.

Fiberoptic tracheal intubation through laryngeal mask is an effective and safe technique in the management of paediatric difficult airway.
