Case report of a 35-year-old male patient, with history of Steinert syndrome, proposed for orthopedic surgery by regional anesthesia due to a bimalleolar fracture of the right lower limb. Steinert syndrome is a rare multisystemic muscular dystrophy and a challenge from an anesthesiologist. The patient had an important component of anxiety and, in order to avoid the use of sedatives or hypnotics, it was decided to apply two acupuncture needles at two points: Yin Tang, an anxiolytic point, and VG 20, another anxiolytic point (Figure 1). The patient remained calm during the procedure and there were no complications. The authors would like to draw attention to the importance of acupuncture as an anxiolytic alternative in the perioperative period, particularly in situations where the drugs commonly used can cause serious complications.
