Abstract

Atropine is a well-known molecule to anesthesiologists, who have long recognized its potential for a paradoxical effect subsequent to administration of low doses of the drug. However, the subject is seldom discussed in recent articles and the true incidence of the phenomenon is therefore hard to estimate. In the present article we present the cases of 7 patients who developed a paradoxical effect after a bolus administration of a 0.5 mg of intravenous atropine, which reverted with an additional dose of 0.5 mg. Lastly, we set out to analyse the underlying mechanisms involved.
