Abstract

After 1400, the Danish administration introduced Danish as the official written language of Norway. As Norwegian nationalism grew in the 1800s, its linguistics consequences were gradually felt. The task of standardizing a modern Norwegian language from the Norwegian dialects was done by Ivar Aasen. The paper traces subsequent and particularly contemporary attempts to resurrect and to revitalize these original languages. The paper seeks to make informed theoretical comment on language revitalization generally.
