The article presents a unique study of China-Africa relations by offering a critical autoethnographic reflection of the experiences of the author as a Chinese language teacher (2021-2023) at the Confucius Institute (CI) in Cabo Verde between 2021 and 2023. The CI is explored as a space of encounter where macro-South-South relations are mediated through daily interactions. The study focuses on the dynamics of cultural practice and affective negotiation between Chinese teachers and Cabo Verdean students and staff. The article unveils a complex interplay of perception and identity when Cabo Verdeans negotiate with the CI, providing a nuanced view of cultural diplomacy within China and Africa.
