Attached to Senegal when this territory became independent in 1960, the Casamance, «Invicta Felix», is at present one of the eight political-administrative regions of the new country. However, as a consequence of the centralism, authoritarianism and discriminations exercised by the central power located in Dakar, particularistic tendencies based on ancient social identities rapidly regain importance in the Casamance. The people of that regions feel frustrated within the Senegalese boundaries and are convinced their incorporation into that country has been a historical error, leading to a direct colonisation based on practices they consider as conceived for this objective. This feeling has made them launch activities of contestation which became more and more serious and radical, additionally stimulated by the repressive reactions from Dakar.
