In this article, we present an ongoing study conducted in the contexts of preschool and primary education in the village of Rabo de Peixe, São Miguel, Azores. It reflects on a project carried out by early childhood education trainees from the Ribeira Grande Vocational School, aiming to promote playful, expressive, artistic, cultural, and sports activities in recreational spaces. The Participatory Action Research methodology was chosen, as the intention was to understand the work dynamics with children that enable them to enjoy leisure and playtime during their free time, fostering socialization and creativity in an educationally stimulating environment. In a preliminary phase, it was observed that: i) children have the opportunity to experience unique moments that contribute to their self-development and personal and social growth in a context of quality time, fun, and freedom; ii) the recreational space lacks sufficient material resources that invite play; iii) artistic expression is highly guided; iv) constraints that cause discomfort to children are evident. It is concluded, therefore, that the recreational space, when designed as a space of freedom in collaboration with the children themselves, transforms their everyday experiences. Through close engagement with children, it becomes possible to respect their rights, cultures, and interests.
