Introduction: Sleep is an essential physiological need for the homeostasis of the human body. Poor sleep quality can lead to cardiovascular, cognitive, emotional, psychomotor, immunological and metabolic consequences, compromising the recovery of the surgical patient.
Objective: To assess the quality of sleep of hospitalized surgical patients by comparing it with that experienced at home, and to determine whether sociodemographic factors influence it.
Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study, carried out with 150 patients hospitalized for a elective surgery in a Portuguese hospital. A sociodemographic and clinical characterization questionnaire was applied, as well as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Results: Most participants report poor sleep quality at home (PSQI>5 of 60.7%) and during hospitalization (PSQI>5 of 89.3%). There is a worsening of the quality of sleep - global value and the value of its duration, latency and efficiency components, and also in the subjective quality of sleep during hospitalization and the increase in the consumption of sleep-promoting medication. Factors such as age, gender and marital status are not determinants of worsening sleep quality during hospitalization.
Conclusion: There is poor quality of sleep from the home environment to the hospital environments, and it is essential to create awareness of this problem among health professionals , in order to mitigate the factors associated with inadequate sleep.
