The centrality of work and the increase in human longevity are both playing a role in the significant importance that retirement is acquiring in people’s daily lives. This article uses a qualitative study based on biographical interviews to discuss the process of relating to retirement. The results show that the heterogeneity of life courses influences the ways in which individuals relate to retirement. Notwithstanding the individual diversity of this process are presented four profile-types, constructed from analytical dimensions, denominated: relational, reserved, conditioned, and instrumental.
