Abstract

The cultural events, especially traditional festivals, are an area of interest to many researchers. They are a vehicle to express the relationship between identity and place. In many countries and regions there is a multiplication of cultural events to persuade visitors or tourists. They create opportunities for travel, increase the demand and promote the development of tourism. This paper analyzes the dimensions of experience that tourists acquired in the Festivity of End-of-Year at Madeira Island. To achieve the objective we applied a survey to tourists, and used as a theoretical model the ‘experience economy’ of Pine and Gilmore (1999). The results showed that most tourists obtained a passive participation between the dimension of experience 'entertainment' and 'aesthetic'.
