Abstract

Maize is the field crop with the largest cultivated area in Portugal. Effective weed control is one of the main factors for its success. A trial in completely random plots (Santarém) was installed with the objective of evaluating the efficacy of three active substances in post-emergence (Dicamba, Mesotrione and Pyridate - DMP) conjugated with and without application of “Humigel B” (HB) and a control (T) with any treatment. The biomass of weeds and plants at the end of the cultural cycle was determined, as well as yield and productivity components. Yield was higher in DMP (15 235 kg/ha) and DMP+HB (15 893 kg/ha). Not controlling weeds (T) affected yield by about 31%. There were no differences in productivity between DMP and DMP+HB. The number of grains per ear was affected, but not the thousand-grain weight, although this was slightly lower in T. Plant dry weight in T was significantly lower than treatments with herbicide application.
