Abstract

The interest in the topic arises from the fact that the Government of Mozambique began the process of revitalising maritime transport (cabotage) in a context characterised by the inexistence of ships and operators of this mode of transport. The aim was to analyse the socio-economic impact of cabotage on the supply of the community of Kanaka Island, thus promoting the development of these communities. An explanatory and quantitative research was used and questionnaires were administered to 100 participants (transport managers, carriers, traders and residents) to collect data to analyse the relationship between the supply of products by sea and the socio-economic development of the community of kanyaka island. The research concludes that the transport of cargo by sea has positively boosted the socio-economic development of Kanyaka Island in the period between 2015 and 2020, largely facilitating trade within the community and between the community and the city of Maputo, there are however structuring aspects to be re-analysed. At the economic level, the results of the research can contribute to the reduction of transport costs in the logistic chain and the consequent reduction of the price of products for the final consumer, in addition to the possibility of increased productivity since the producers may have easier access to potential markets. The dissemination of the results of this research may also contribute to the search for solutions for the viability of national maritime transport, promoting the empowerment of Mozambicans, also opening space for further reflection and research in this thematic area.
