Thematic Dossier | Representations of the Human and Humanity [2027]

2026-05-20

The concept of the Human is not a given, but rather a social and cultural construct with its own temporalities. The AHAM Journal invites submissions analysing how the Human and Humanity have been represented, tracing their evolution across various historical periods and cultural landscapes, recognising their internal complexities and multiplicities.

Researchers in the fields of History, Literature, Art, Politics, Philosophy, among other fields, are invited to submit proposals offering new perspectives on Human existence, adopting a historically contextualized perspective to encompass different agencies and discontinuity over time, as well as the various processes of globalisation and communication with implications for today’s shared heritage.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Power in the production of knowledge;
  • Processes of classification that justified exclusion and subordination;
  • Questions of identity, alterity, and otherness;
  • Historically situated dichotomies of the Human (Human/non-human, subhuman/superhuman, and inhuman/more-than-human);
  • Construction of narratives of innovation and rupture with the past;
  • Circulation of ideas and their settings;
  • Relationships between Human communities and their natural environments;
  • Discussions on modernity and modernities.

These questions and topics form part of the research being developed by CHAM as part of its strategic plan (2025-2029).

Proposals for articles (minimum 6,000 words, maximum 12,000 words, including footnotes, images, and bibliography) should be submitted via the journal’s website (here) by 30 November 2026.

Proposals in Portuguese, Spanish, English, French or Italian will be accepted. Manuscripts will then undergo external peer review as part of a double-blind process. This thematic issue is scheduled for publication in 2027.
