In June of 1772 a conflict between two quitandeiras of the city of Rio de Janeiro gave rise to a process for insults. Throughout the process, the meaning of each insult and the difference between the two women was discussed. This article stops in this plot: categories that are stressed in an effort to define and differentiate between a negra and a preta; an unmarried woman and a married woman; a woman from the street and another from the house. We work with the incorporation of the gender variable to the analysis of the qualities and forms of social classification.
