The purpose of this article is to analyze the actions of Catarina Juliana and the inquisitorial discourse in the light of studies on the History of Women in the Atlantic world. The analysis is articulated in three axes: in unveiling the missionary presence in the interior of Angola and the relationship established with the inquisitorial process; in Catarina’s trajectory and her performance as a “gangue” among the Mbundu and in the exorcist practices for spiritual healing of the sick considered bewitched. The central hypothesis is that Catarina’s actions confronted the process of spreading the faith and expanding Christianity in Angola.
