The lists of inhabitants were produced in São Paulo between 1765 and 1836. At first aimed to identify the availability of men to serve in the troops, in the last decade of the eighteenth century gained importance as an identification tool of economic production, with a view to establish agricultural development policies. Drawing up the lists was a huge organizational challenge for the administrative conditions of the period, for all sorts of obstacles were encountered. Identifying organizational procedures and point out its inevitable flaws and gaps is critical to ensure the reliability of the huge volume of information so collected.
