In the early sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries Cartagena de Indias became one of the major ports of the articulation of the Atlantic trade and the regional trade in the Caribbean. As a fleet port authorized for the introduction of slaves, it was an attractive place for the arrival of the Portuguese slave traders. They played a crucial role in shaping the society Cartagena. In this article, using sources from the Archivo General de Indias, we rebuild the lives of some of these active traders.
