In 1557, King Philip II expressed to Luis de Velasco, the Viceroy of New Spain, his wish for new maritime expeditions to the islas del Poniente. In response, Velasco engaged in conversations and, in the next year, he sent to the Spanish Court a report by Juan Pablo de Carrión, a sailor from Valladolid who had taken part in Ruy López de Villalobos’ expedition. This paper examines the report, which reflects the collective knowledge about the return voyage available at the time.
